Is Switzerland a good place to get married?

Absolutely! Switzerland offers a stunning backdrop for your elopement, with majestic mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and charming villages. It’s a dream location for a romantic and unforgettable start to your married life.

Considering trading the traditional wedding for an elopement amidst the breathtaking beauty of Switzerland?

Let me tell you, it’s an absolutely brilliant idea! Here’s why:

  • Jaw-dropping Scenery: Picture-perfect mountains, serene lakes, cascading waterfalls, and enchanting forests – Switzerland is a fairy tale come true! Whatever your heart desires, you’ll find the perfect backdrop for your special day.
  • No Hassle Permits: Forget about bureaucratic red tape! In most places, you can simply pack your bags and elope without needing any permits (unless you are planning a big installation). It’s a dream come true for couples seeking simplicity and ease.
  • Escape the Crowds: Unlike popular wedding spots like crowded national parks in the US, Switzerland offers more intimate settings. You’re more likely to have your own slice of paradise all to yourselves on your big day. And anyhow, can you name anyone who eloped in Switzerland?
  • Mesmerizing Lakes: Switzerland boasts some of the most captivating alpine lakes globally. Whether you fancy paddleboarding, a romantic boat ride, or a refreshing swim post-vows, the options are endless. And imagine cozying up by a bonfire beside a shimmering lake at night!

Which season to elope in Switzerland?

What is the best time of year to elope in Switzerland?

elope in zermatt

Summer (June to August): Great for hiking elopements. Avoid July and mid-August if you don’t like crowds. This is the best time if you want to minimise the risks of rain and cold.

Winter (December to April): Perfect for a snowy elopement! If you don’t like the cold, avoid December-February. From mid April things gets more complicated with closure of ski areas and the moody spring-weather season starts.

Spring (End of April to early June): Not the best time as many mountain areas are closed. Consider a city elopement or a vineyard elopement in Lavaux or a couple of my mountain spots that I have in my pocket. But do expect moody weather.

Autumn (September to October): September is less crowded and usually still mild and colourful. October provides beautiful landscapes with orange larch trees. It can be risky though as it can start snowing early so you need to be prepared for chiller weather. November I don’t even talk about – Forget about eloping in November please.

how to get to Switzerland?

There are two international airports: Zurich and Geneva. Fly into one and out of the other if you’re planning a road trip.

If you’re sticking to one area, go ahead and pick the airport that’s closest. And guess what? Nothing in Switzerland is really that far away. It’s like they’ve got teleportation booths hidden behind the Matterhorn or something! So whether you’re hopping on a train, bus, or even a friendly St. Bernard with a barrel of schnapps, you’ll be zipping around those Alpine vistas in no time.

how to get around When in Switzerland?

So, the public transport system in Switzerland is like a well-oiled machine—smooth and comfy. If you’re planning to hit up just a couple of spots, I’d say stick to the basics cos you will get the best views from the train. Look into the Swiss Travel pass and check out the timetables on CFF/SBB—they’ve got all the info you need.

Now, if you’re feeling adventurous and have a bunch of luggage (or maybe a secret desire to channel your inner James Bond), renting a car for those remote mountain escapades might be the way to go. Just remember to keep an eye on those speed limits—I speak from experience!

Can you get married in Switzerland as a foreigner?

Can Americans elope in Switzerland?(legally)

First off, I’d recommend signing the legal papers in your home country before jetting off to Switzerland. It’s simpler and more budget-friendly that way. But if you’re set on tying the knot and celebrating on the same day, here’s what you need to know:

Each canton in Switzerland has its own set of procedures (typical Swiss, right?), so it’s crucial to plan ahead and ensure you have enough time. Check in with the local municipality where you plan to elope to get a clear timeline. Some cantons might even require additional documents proving your eligibility to marry and the recognition of the marriage by your home country.

Here’s the gist of what you’ll need to do:

  • Submit an application for marriage preparation at the Registry Office in the town where you plan to say “I do.”
  • Sign a special declaration affirming that you meet all the requirements for marriage and that your documents are accurate. This declaration must be signed in person at the Swiss Embassy in your home country.

Now, onto the paperwork:

  • Both of your birth certificates should be no older than 6 months.
  • Don’t forget your valid passports (and residence permits if applicable).
  • If either of you is divorced or widowed, bring along the relevant certificates.
  • If you’re planning to change your names, you’ll need a deed poll of change of name with apostille.
  • If you have children together, bring their passports and birth certificates.
  • Additional documents may be needed, so it’s always best to double-check with the local Civil Registry office in Switzerland.

Oh, and about the ceremony – it’ll be conducted in the local language, so make sure you have someone who can translate if needed.
