WHAT MONTH IS THE
Best time to plan a hiking elopement
Eloping in the Alps during hiking season is such a special experience—quiet trails, epic views, and the kind of moments that feel totally yours. But choosing the right time of year is key. Weather, trail access, and crowds can vary a lot depending on the month, and that can really shape the vibe of your day.
Generally, the hiking season runs from late June to early October, but that window can shift depending on snow melt and elevation. Some trails open early in May, others stay snowy into July. In the higher regions (especially in Switzerland), conditions can change quickly, so it’s always worth planning with a bit of flexibility.
It’s also good to think about what kind of experience you’re after—do you want warm summer days and lush green scenery, or quiet golden evenings and crisp mountain air? There’s no one “perfect” time—just the best time for you.
In the next sections, I’ll break down what each month offers, so you can find the one that feels just right for your adventure.
May hiking elopements
IN-BETWEEN WINTER AND SUMMER SEASON
If you’re dreaming of quiet trails, fresh greenery, and a peaceful, slower-paced atmosphere, May might be a lovely month for your elopement—as long as you’re flexible. It’s the start of spring down in the valleys, with blooming flowers, rushing waterfalls, and a soft, fresh landscape that feels full of new beginnings.
Potential Challenges to elope in may:
May is still too early for most hikes. Snow often lingers above 1,500–2,000 meters and most mountain lakes are still frozen, mountain huts, lifts, and scenic passes don’t usually open until mid or late June. The weather can also be quite moody and changeable—sunny and warm one day, chilly or rainy the next. Some days may still even bring fresh snow at mid-higher altitudes.
Why eloping in may:
It’s quiet, green, and there’s something special about being in the Alps before the summer crowds arrive. Lower elevation areas—like the Lauterbrunnen Valley or Appenzell —are often already accessible and bursting with spring charm. If you don’t mind skipping the high alpine peaks, May can offer an intimate, nature-filled elopement with that peaceful, in-between-season magic.
June hiking elopements
LONG DAYS JUST BEFORE PEAK SEASON
If you’re dreaming of longer days, blooming alpine meadows, and the mountains starting to open up, June can be a beautiful time to elope in the Swiss Alps. It’s the beginning of hiking season in many regions, especially at lower to mid elevations, and the landscapes are incredibly lush after the snowmelt.
Potential Challenges to elope in June:
While many trails are becoming accessible, higher elevation hikes (above ~2,200 meters) can still be patchy with snow, especially in early June. Some huts and cable cars may not open until mid or late in the month, depending on the region and snowpack from the winter. Weather-wise, June can be a mix of warm sunshine, lingering spring showers, and sudden changes—typical for mountain conditions.
Why eloping in June:
.It’s the perfect shoulder month for couples who want to beat the summer crowds but still experience that stunning mountain beauty. Waterfalls are at their strongest, wildflowers start popping up everywhere, and the air feels fresh and full of possibility. Plus, accommodations and trails are generally quieter than in July or August, giving you more space to soak in the moment together.
july elopements
PEAK HIKING SEASON
If you’re dreaming of full-on summer in the Alps—clear trails, blooming wildflowers, and warm, sunny days—July is one of the best months to elope. Most hiking routes are open by now, including many higher elevation trails, and the mountains are at their most vibrant.
Potential Challenges to elope in July:
With great conditions (and school holidays) comes more people. July is the start of the busy season, especially in popular spots like Lauterbrunnen, Zermatt and around lake Lucerne. You’ll want to plan ahead for accommodations and be prepared to share the trails – especially during the day. Afternoon thunderstorms are also common so starting early is a tip.
Why eloping in July:
Everything is alive, it’s nice and warm (mostly). The scenery is stunning with green valleys, snowy peaks in the horizon and wildflowers. All the lifts, huts, and passes are open so no restrictions to any epic backdrop.
WHAT MONTH IS THE BEST MONTH TO ELOPE
August elopements
Spring skiing with the chance of mild days
Eloping in August is very similar to July. If you’re after long, warm days and clear views and full trail access across the alps, August is peak hiking season – and a stunning time to elope.
Potential Challenges for an August elopement:
August is very busy until after the school start especially. Trails, towns and accommodation can get crowded, and prices are often at their highest. Also watch out for the afternoon thunderstorms which are common in the summer heat. So plan the helicopter in the morning.
Why eloping in August?
Everything is open and the weather is generally reliable. If you don’t mind sharing the mountain it’s the perfect month for stargazing, sunrise vows and even a dip in a mountain lake. Go midweek for a little less crowds.
September elopements
AUTUMN COLORS AND QUIETER MOUNTAINS
If you’re dreaming of golden light, cooler temperatures and quiet trails, September might be the perfect month to elope in the Alps. The landscapes are still lush, most trails and lifts are open and there’s a peacefulness in the air as the summer crowds start to fade. It’s also the month where I get booked out first.
Potential Challenges for a September elopement:
Weather becomes a little more unpredictable as the month goes on. You might get beautiful, sunny days – or early signs of autumn with crisp mornings and the occasional rain or fog. In higher areas, some huts and lifts start to close mid to late September, so it’s a good idea to double-check availability before finalising plans.
Why eloping in September?
It’s the sweet spot – you still get access to most of the mountains, but without the crowds of July and August. The light is softer (hello dreamy photos), the air is clear and fresh, and everything just feels a bit calmer. It’s also a great time if you want a cozy, romantic vibe without sacrificing those big alpine views.
October elopements
LONG DAYS JUST BEFORE PEAK SEASON
If you ask me, it’s the most beautiful month as the larches turn golden orange. Si if you love the idea of golden trees, turquoise lakes, maybe the first little layer of snow and having the mountains mostly to yourselves, October can be a beautiful time to elope in the Alps – especially at lower to mid elevations. The fall colors in Switzerland are stunning.
Potential Challenges to elope in October:
By October host high-altitude trails, lifts and huts are closed or closing soon. Snow can return to the peaks at any time, and weather can shift quickly – from crisp sunshine to rain or even early snow storms (snow usually melts fast). Some mountain areas start to feel quiet and shut down in preparation for winter so you need to be flexible and focus on lower elevation locations.
Why eloping in October:
The autumn colors and peaceful atmosphere makes it feel like you have the Alps all to yourselves. Think golden larches, foggy valleys, and soft mountain light. If you’re drawn to a slower, more intimate elopement – maybe with warm drinks, a moody backdrop, October can incredibly romantic, as long as you’re ready for a bit of unpredictability (more than usual)
Thinking about a November elopement?
Just… don’t…
How to choose elopement photographer
Helicopter Elopement?
If you’re dreaming of combining your hiking elopement with saying your vows on a remote mountain top with glacier and no hiking required, a helicopter elopement might be exactly what you’re looking for. In summer, a helicopter elopement allows you to have it all – snow and ice and then back down to the warm flowery meadows.
When planning a helicopter elopement you will also need a back up plan as flying is not possible in all weathers.
Helicopter elopement Regulations in Switzerland, France and Italy
Taking the helicopter, swirl around Matterhorn (or other peaks) and then land on a secluded mountain is one of the most exciting and cinematic ways to elope in the Alps – but laws and possibilities differ between the country.
In Switzerland helicopters are only allowed to land on designated mountain spots but it’s probably the most sure country to take the helicopter for your vows. Italy/Dolomites operates in a similar way but each region has their own rules and landing spots can vary. In France helicoptering is very restricted and you cannot land on your own little mountain top.

Weather on your hiking elopement!
When planning a hiking elopement in the mountains, the weather plays a huge role- not just in how your day looks, but in how it feels. The Alps are wild, beautiful and unpredictable, so Here’s what to know when it comes to the elements:
1. Mountain weather changes fast
One of the golden rules in the Alps: expect the weather to shift quickly. A sunny morning can turn into clouds or rain by the afternoon, especially in summer. That’s shy it’s always smart o plan your hike and your ceremony – for earlier in the day when the skies are more stable.
Pro- tip: Keep an eye on the forecast, but don’t trust it 100%. Conditions can vary a lot depending on on altitude and region.
2. Season Matters
May/early June: Snow often lingers on trails and passes; expect rain and muddy conditions.
Late June–August: Warm and lush, but prone to afternoon thunderstorms. Best time for high mountain trails.
September: Clearer air, softer light, fewer storms. Cooler mornings and evenings.
October: Beautiful fall colors, but much colder and less predictable.
3. Altitude makes a big difference
The weather at 2500 meters and up is totally different than in the valley. It’s usually colder, windier, and more exposed. Even in summer, you might find snow patches on high trails and need to bring a warm layer – even i
4. Rain Isn’t Always a dealbreaker
A bit of rain doesn’t mean your elopement i ruined. In fact, clouds and mist can make the mountains feel even more magical and intimate. That said, heavy rain can make some trails slippery or unsafe, so it’s important to be flexible with timing or location if needed.
Pro tip: Back up ideas can be to find a covered view point, a lower elevation hike, or even shifting your timing by a few hours can make a big difference.
5. Sun protection is important
It’s easy to forget, but the sun is strong in the mountains, especially at hight altitudes. Sunscreen and sunglasses (and perhaps a hat) are key. Noone wants a sunburn in their elopement photos. If you have a make up artist, ask them to put a base layer with sunscreen.
6. Be flexible, have a plan B, and laugh and dance in the rain.
You can’t control mountain weather – but you can prepare for it. With the right mindset, good gear and a bit of flexibility, your hiking elopement will be beautiful no matter what the sky is doing.
Considering these weather factors will help ensure your hiking elopement is as magical as you’ve dreamed, no matter what the forecast says. With the right preparation, you’ll be able to embrace the beauty of the mountains and make the most of your adventure, snow or shine!
Things to consider when choosing a wedding dress for a hiking elopement
When you’re planning a hiking elopement in the Alps (or anywhere wild and beautiful), your dress should feel just as adventurous as the day itself. It needs to be easy to move in, comfortable to wear, and still make you feel amazing in the mountains. Here’s what to consider when choosing the perfect dress for your hiking wedding day.
1. Comfortable wedding dress
You’ll be walking, climbing and moving a big part of the day.
Unlike a traditional wedding, hiking elopements usually involve hours outdoors – walking, climbing over rocks, or even sitting in the grass. Your dress needs to move with you, not against you.
- Lightweight fabrics like chiffon, tulle, and silk works beautifully and won’t weight you down.
- Look for a dress you can walk, squat, and lift your legs in – and test it before your wedding day.
- Avoid tight mermaid styles that may feel restrictive on the trail.
- Can the train be attached for hikes?
1 packable wedding dress
2. Packability: will dit fit in your backpack (or be easy to carry on board)?
If it’s a simple hike up to an hour I would say couples usually hike in their wedding ware. But if it’s a long or difficult hike couples usually hike in their regular clothes and change into their wedding outfits at the top. If that’s your case your dress should be easy to fold or roll, and ideally resistant to wrinkling.
- Dresses with less structure and no boning pack down much smaller.
- Consider bringing your dress in a garment bag inside your pack or clipped to the outside so it’s protected from picnic and other stuff you need to bring that may
- Shorter trains or detachable skirts are practical for hiking
3. Weather- ready: Choose a dress that suits the season and the altitude
Mountain weather is unpredictable – sun, wind, rain or even snow can happen in one day. Make sure your dress can handle the conditions you might face.
- in warmer months, you may want to have a breathable fabric
- For cooler conditions (especially at night at higher altitudes), long sleeves or layered styles can keep you warm.
- You can also add a cozy fake fur, or wool under layers for cooler evenings and night time adventures.
- Choose a dress you dont mind getting a little dirty – some grass or dirt stains just adds adventure to the story!
4. What Footwear do I choose for a hiking elopement
This one’s big. You’ll want supportive hiking boots with a good sole (think slippery hiking trails) for most of the day. You can absolutely wear your boots with your dress – they look adventurous and you’ll thank yourself for the comfort and safety.
Depending on your plan and packing possibilities you can perhaps bring fancier shoes for a part of the day, maybe for the ceremony?
tHINGS FOR THE GROOM TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING
Wedding attire for a hiking elopement
When you’re hiking to your ceremony spot, your outfits need to balance style, comfort and practicality. Here’s what to think about so you can look amazing and enjoy every step of the adventure.
1. Comfortable wedding wear
You’re going to be hiking, sweating and possibly climbing – and you don’t want to fel stiff or restricted.
- Go for lightweight, breathable, stretchable fabrics like linen, wool blends or stretch cotton.
- Avoid super structured or heavy suits that feel tight
- Make sure your pants give you enough freedom to move.
2. Layers for changing mountain weather
Mountain weather can change fast – even in summer – so your outfit needs to handle both sun, wind warm and cold.
- Consider layering with a vest, wool off. sweater, or jacket that you can take on and off.
- Don’t be afraid to bring a scarf, beanie or coat for colder conditions – especially for evenings, sunrise experiences and stargazing adventures.
3. Footwear for the groom for the hiking elopement
You’ll want proper hiking boots with good grip for the hike. No dress shoes on rocky and slippery paths! Additionally it adds adventure to your photos. If you want fancier shoes for parts of the day you can pack a it in your backpack.

Celebrate your vows with a toast! A small bottle of champagne, prosecco, or local schnapps adds a festive touch. Just be sure to pack it out—and maybe bring some lightweight reusable glasses.

Sustainable elopement
SUSTAINABLE TIPS WHEN PLANNING A HIKING ELOPEMENT
- Use Eco-Friendly Products: Consider using biodegradable or reusable products for your ceremony – reusable cups or plates, and even a sustainable bouquet. Skip single-use plastics where possible.
- Buy second-hand: Wedding ware and wedding materials are often used only once so consider checking second hand shops or online sites such as Marketplace or similar. You will be astonished how much great stuff you will find there for a fraction of the original price .
- Use local Vendors – and not fly them in from everywhere.
By following these guidelines, you’ll not only enjoy your beautiful hiking elopement but also help keep the mountains pristine for future adventurers. It’s all about being mindful of the environment and leaving it just as beautiful as you found it!
Leave no Trace
WHEN PLANNING YOUR HIKING ELOPEMENT
- Respect the Landscape: Stick to established trails and areas that are designated for hiking. Avoid stepping off-trail, as it can damage fragile ecosystems, ask your guide first.
- Leave Nature as You Found It: Be mindful of your surroundings during your ceremony and photos. Consider using natural elements already in the environment for a sustainable touch. If you want to spray the Champagne – consider spraying sparkling water and have an extra bottle with real champagne to drink. Make sure the cork is in your pocket and not left in nature.
- Pack Out Everything: Bring a trash bag and make sure to pack out everything you bring with you, including tissues, wrappers, and food packaging. In the mountains, it’s easy to forget that even small bits of trash can have a big impact on the environment.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT
Hiking elopement photographer & planner
Choosing the Right Photographer and Planner for Your hiking Elopement
Planning a hiking elopement is all about embracing adventure and creating a day that’s uniquely you. But to make sure everything goes off without a hitch, choosing the right photographer and planner is key. Here’s what to think about when picking your dream team and why getting it right matters.
1. Is fit and an experienced outdoor person
You’ll want a photographer and planner who knows the outdoors! And additionally knows the ins and outs of hiking elopements and focuses on experience rather than making your day into a photoshoot. An experienced photographer knows how to behave in nature capture stunning shots at the same time in all conditions and how to work with the lighting to make sure you look your best on your most important day!
2. Experience with Hiking Elopements
The mountains come with their own set of challenges—think unpredictable weather and tricky terrain—so having a planner who’s loves the outdoors and have worked in these conditions is a must. They’ll handle the details like timing and conditions, so you don’t have to. Pick someone who has your back and knows what to do in case of an accident or sudden weather changes (I always carry a little first aid kit, protection and other handy stuff in my Mary Poppins bag. In my opinion your planner/guide should also have done at least one elopement education (remember in Europe people don’t elope). Also, just because someone lives in the Alps – it doesn’t make them someone experienced with the outdoors and the mountains.
3. A Connection You Can Trust
You’ll be spending a lot of time with your photographer and planner, so it’s important to vibe with them. Make sure they understand and care about your vision and are as excited as you are to bring it to life. A good connection helps everything run smoothly, and you’ll feel way more relaxed on your big day.
4. Flexibility and Problem-Solving
Mountain weather is unpredictable—one minute you have a storm, the next minute it’s clear skies. So you’ll need a photographer and planner who can roll with the punches. Whether it’s a change in weather or last-minute logistical hiccups, your team should be able to think on their feet.
5. Check Their Work and Reviews
Look at the photographer’s portfolio and planner’s past work. For photographers, make sure their style fits your vibe and that they have experience shooting in wintery conditions. A planner should have a solid track record with elopements and glowing reviews from happy couples.
6. Communication Is Everything
Planning an elopement from afar or while juggling other things can be tricky, so it’s important to choose a photographer and planner who communicate clearly and promptly. You don’t want surprises when it comes to pricing or important details.
What happens if you don’t choose the right photographer/planner?
If you don’t pick someone that is an experienced outdoor elopement professional and with the right experience and equipment, you could run into problems. A planner unfamiliar with mountain weather, hiking and elopement will not be properly prepared and could potentially put you in danger.
At the end of the day, picking the right photographer and planner makes all the difference in making your hiking elopement magical and stress-free. By choosing the right team, you can relax and focus on enjoying your once-in-a-lifetime adventure!
