Ski & Snowboard Elopement in Zermatt, Switzerland: A Legendary Winter Wedding at the base of Matterhorn

Some weddings feel like an adventure movie—and Ryan and Stephanie’s ski & snowboard elopement in Zermatt, Switzerland was exactly that. These two share a deep love for skiing, so choosing a winter elopement in the Swiss Alps felt like the most authentic way for them to celebrate their marriage.

As their local Swiss photographer and planner, I had the honour of helping them create a day that was personal, fun, and completely free from tradition. What unfolded was a breathtaking celebration on skis, with the Matterhorn keeping watch the entire time.

A real Ski / Snowboard elopement love story

Ryan and Stephanie’s story began with a twist: Stephanie was actually on a first date with someone else when she met Ryan. That date didn’t work out—but something much better began. Their bond grew quickly, especially over their shared love of skiing.

So when it came time to plan their wedding, the choice was obvious:
An adventurous ski & snowboard elopement in Zermatt Switzerland.

They wanted a carefree, outdoor ceremony, a stunning mountain backdrop, and a day filled with skiing, fun, movement, and genuine connection. No rules. No pressure. No expectations to follow tradition.

Why they chose a ski & snowboard wedding in Zermatt

From the beginning, they knew they wanted:

  • A mountain ceremony
  • Powder snow and epic views
  • A fast-paced, joyful day on skis (with heliskiing if possible)
  • An experience that felt true to who they are

Zermatt checked every box.

The biggest challenge?
Planning a ski & snowboard elopement in Zermatt from another continent—without ever having visited Zermatt or skied in Europe before. Naturally, there was some stress about choosing a place and a photographer / planner they’d never seen with their own eyes.

But the moment they arrived, they knew they had made the right choice.

Planning a destination elopement in switzerland

Planning a winter elopement from abroad can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re balancing travel logistics, weather, ski conditions, and timing. Ryan and Stephanie quickly learned that the trick is to lean into flexibility and trust the process.

They said the wedding planning industry sometimes feels full of unnecessary expectations and inflated prices. That’s exactly why they chose a non-traditional path:
If they were going to invest in their wedding, it should be exactly the day they dreamed of.

And that’s what we created together.

Ski-In, Ski-Out Wedding Ceremony With the Matterhorn

Their wedding day began with getting ready in the hotel, first look in Zermatt old town and then a gondola ride up the mountain with their two closest friends—Derek, who officiated the ceremony, and Cindy, who joined as witness. From the top, we clipped into our skis and carved down the slopes to their ceremony spot with a perfect view of the Matterhorn.

Derek shared a few heartfelt words. Then Ryan and Stephanie hiked a short distance away to exchange their vows privately—just the two of them, the mountains, and the peaceful winter silence.

It was one of those rare moments where time felt like it stopped.

Skiing across the entire Zermatt ski area

After their private vow exchange, the adventure truly kicked off. Instead of staying in one location, we spent the day skiing across the entire Zermatt–Matterhorn ski area—carving from one side of the mountain to the other, soaking in panoramic views that stretched all the way into Italy.

There was something incredibly special about moving through this massive landscape together. Every lift ride, every ski run, every stop became part of their story. Locals and tourists cheered for them as they passed by in their wedding outfits, and the energy was contagious—joyful, spontaneous, and full of mountain magic.

Halfway through the journey, we made a quick stop for lunch at Alphitta, one of the coziest spots on the mountain, known for great food, warm atmosphere, and the kindest staff. When Ryan and Stephanie walked onto the patio, the entire restaurant stood up to cheer for them. It was one of those “wow, this is really happening” moments that made the day feel even more surreal.

After lunch, we continued skiing toward the highest point of the resort. That’s where their helicopter would meet us—literally at the top of the ski area—to take us deep into the Alps for their glacier landing, champagne toast, and first dance.

Helicopter + Glacier First Dance: The Ultimate Zermatt Wedding Experience

After skiing through literally the whole Zermatt ski area, the adventure climbed even higher—literally.

A private helicopter picked us up on the other side of the mountain, swept us up into the sky, circling the Matterhorn and flying deep into the Alps. We landed on a pristine glacier where Ryan and Stephanie shared some champagne and their first dance in the most surreal landscape imaginable. Snow, ice, wind, champagne… and two absolutely glowing newlyweds.

It was wild, emotional, and incredibly beautiful—hands down the elopement with the most focus on skiing and snowboarding I’ve ever captured. They are really wild about their common passion skiing!

Après-Ski Wedding Celebration in Zermatt Village

After the helicopter adventure, they headed to after-ski for some drinks and dancing (because what’s a ski or snowboard elopement without an after-ski), then some pool games and more drinks back at the hotel bar. At the end of the day they enjoyed a relaxed, cozy evening meal before heading out to celebrate at Mamacita’s, their favourite party spot in Zermatt.

A live band played all their requests, and they danced until late into the night—no timelines, no formalities, just pure happiness.

KIND WORDS fROM THE COUPLE

snowboard-elopement

My husband and I knew we wanted to elope since we got engaged. Our love for skiing and travel had to be a part of our big day. After lots of research and contemplating, we decided on Zermatt after coming across Malin’s instagram.

As soon as I reached out to her she was prompt at getting back to me and setting up a video chat to get to know us better. The planning process seemed a bit daunting and overwhelming even with all our travel experience in the past. But Malin helped us navigate through the jitters.
Once in Switzerland and approaching our day, weather seemed to give us reason to pivot some of our plans. We were even considering moving back our day due to the forecast. Malin was checking in with us every step of the way, giving her expert opinion. We decided to stick with our original day, but with a slight change of plans. Malin facilitated getting in touch with the heli company in town to let them know our plans were changing a bit.

Ryan and I look back on our wedding day with pure bliss. Malin is INCREDIBLE. watching her navigate the mountain on skis with her two cameras and huge pack like an absolute beast. She made our day so fun packed, bouncing all over the mountain getting soo many rad shots.
When we got our preview pics back, we were overcome with how impressive they were. We knew they would be beautiful because of where we were but WOW. Malin is so talented!

I have no regrets about how we decided to do our big day. It was magical. One take away for me, is that our day had to have an aspect of “winging it” due to changing weather. Which I do not always do well with not knowing a solid plan, especially in my wedding day. Malin did her absolute best to make sure my fears were calmed and that everything would work out, and it did.

All in all, we are so happy with our decision to elope, and ultimately choose Malin as our photographer. We can’t thank her enough for making our perfect day a lasting memory.

Thank you Malin! We love you!
XO Steph and Ryan 3/10/25

What They Loved Most About Their Zermatt Elopement

One of their favourite parts of the day was the way strangers on the mountain cheered for them everywhere they went. At lunch, an entire restaurant patio stood up to clap and celebrate them—even though no one knew who they were.

They said it felt like they were the main characters in their own movie.

And honestly? They were.

Their biggest investment was photography (I’m honoured!), and they said it was worth every penny because their experience—and the memories captured—meant the world to them.

They saved a bit by:

  • Making their own bouquet from silk flowers
  • Stephanie doing her own hair and makeup (she’s a hairstylist!)

But overall, they were able to create the exact day they wanted without holding back.

If they could change anything?
Nothing.
They truly lived their dream day.

Their message for future couples is simple and powerful:

“Do it your way. A wedding should be about the two people getting married—not about making others happy.”

Whether you want to elope on a mountaintop, ski into your ceremony, have a private vow exchange, or skip every single tradition—your wedding should feel like you.
